Music Magazine Conventions

Main conventions

are the widely recognized way of formatting in different media platforms, this mostly consist of content. style and form.
These are the conventions needed in order to create a successfully magazine

Masthead: This is the title block for the magazine, usually this is the most eye catching convention on the page because it is so distinct.

Menu: The list of content inside the magazine.

Pugs: These are placed at the top left or right hand of the magazine to catch the readers eyes, these normally consist of the prices and or logos.

Tags: categorizing the reader's interest in a story by using words or phrases to engage the reader, such as sensational, new, exclusive.

Secondary lead: lead a sneak preview of an inside article or story usually a picture.

Sidebar: an additional box next to the main feature of the magazine.

Strapline: Subheading

Crosshead: a subheading that shows in the body of the text and is centered above the column of text.

Exclusive: this means that newspaper and no one else solely cover the story. the paper will pay their interviewees, buying the story so it cannot be used by another paper.

Splash: main story of the front page accompanied with the headline and a

Lead Story: usually a splash, it's the main story.

lure: could be used as a marketing device, its usually a word or phrase that makes the reader read the inside articles.

Typography

Typography is the art and technique aspect of type design, typography is a widely practice exercise and it makes appears in a branches of media and advertisement whether it be billboards or logos. Typography plays a major role in making any graphic design successful. Without typography every design would appear to be incomplete.
Typography allow designers to be creative in ways that most aspects of graphic design has certain limitations placed. However in many situations the importance of typography has been grossly overlooked leaving the final outcome of the projects insufficient for example the fonts used in billboards must be made big and not to fancy so it is still possible for passersby to read and grasp the message of the billboard.

Whenever typography is used whether it is used in publishing, packaging or television, the designer always has to adapt their styles and techniques to suit the medium and the chosen demographic, for example a masthead style that works just fine on a magazine may not necessarily work on a poster or on a billboard. A magazine is always viewed straight on arms length, so letter spacing can be as tight as you like and the words will still be readable. Lately there have been a growing amount of advertisements that make fun and creative uses of typography to get their message across, these advertisements are very effective because they leave an impression on the minds of the audience that view the medium and this is what I plan to achieve with the typography used in my music magazine.

Colours

The use of colour in the media world is very subjective, the main purpose of the use of colour evoke a certain reaction in the main audience sometimes this is due to personal prefernce, and other times due to cultural; background and influence

Music Magazine Inoduction (countinued)

What I am Doing

For my first AS media coursew work I was tasked with creating a coverpoage, double page spread and content page of a music magazine. The research for this course work will be very complex and dertailed, I would need to reasearch into differentr types of Music magazine and then pick the genre I would lik to vnture into, but I was that it will be possible to merge to different types of genre into one magazine; this is one type of asp[ect I would love to venture in.
In this blog I would be givving very detailed anaylysis of each step I take, this type o analysis is needed to note to the examinrs of each different stps I took in my jorney to creat this magazaine.
I am personally excited for ths project because I get toexpress my uintrest in both music and media in one project.

What Is A Music Magazine

What Diferent types of music magazines exist

Pop  Magazines

Pop Magazines usually if not all the time consists of bright and femmine colours, different typs of font slammed onto the page, a majority of differnt images slammed onto the page, a cover image consisting of a pop star; uses miss en sense very much like the magazine consists of brightly coloured and femine clothes. In additions Pop magazines cover pages are usually clutted with a lot of information of different articles inside the issues to draw their demographic into purchases that particular issue.
Sinces the intnnd target audience for Pop magzines (especially the example above) are pre teen and early teens females; the magazine had been particulaly formated to suit the choosen demographic, for example the use of bright flamboyant colours, articles giving advice of hair and makeup, articles about the "Hottest Celeb Gossip". Usualy the itle and mastrheads of pop magazines would be quit large and would probably stand out mre thn ay other txt on th page and consist of bright femmine colours to suit the demographic.
The cover image would always consist of current and popular artist who had offered exclusize intervies with the publication.
The laungage used in these typs of magazines is always informal, this was spefically done by puplishers and editors to allow the demographic to feel that they can relate to the magazine and thus th readers develope a relationship with issues prompting them to buy more magazines from the publishers.

Rock Magazine

Rock and Heavy metal mgazines are globbaly know for having a very dark overtone and theme this is one to link in withg the entierty of the genre. The front covers are also clttered with text and and puffs much like Pop magazines. Heavyumetal artist and listeners of heavymetal are knopw to have a very wild and unconrolable attitude this is reflected in the magazines front covers. Norm, lly the coverstart of rock magazines would not be new up and comming artist but rather a band or an artsist so are well know in the indusrty that would be rememberd for a vry long time, Jimmy Hendrix being a prime example.

Indie Magazine

Indie Magazines are known for having very simple masthead and the entire page is not overdone. The title would take up the entire top section of the magazine, which would make it easier to spot on the shelves amongst the other magazine competitors. Like most other music magazine the cover image would be of a current artist or band as most indie music is aimed at a younger generation. Some indie magazine would include puffs with other band names and current news in the indie industry. There could also be other graphic images of other indie bands that are also current and this would attract the consumers as it doesn’t feature just one band or musician. The colours would be dark and neutral as indie can be like rock but it is not as heavy and loud as rock so the colours would reflect on the magazine. Indie is also not as messy as rock so that would also reflect on the magazine as it would not be as crowded or cluttered as the other magazines such as pop and rock.
